If prices were to go up everywhere, it wouldn't help the homeowner, since he or she couldn't afford to buy a new home in the same market, Green explained. "The only way you can benefit is if you sold a house in California in 2006 and moved to Alabama." Green is director and chair of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate.
